I was champagne drunk, treading water in Watts Bar Lake in celebration of my imminent wedding, when Director Jordan Noel poked his head over the side of the boat and said "We made a feature film and I want you to score it." My first thought was that I had no idea how to do that. Then I realized...he'd never made a feature before, so it only seemed fitting that we learn together. So I said I'd do it, of course. He wanted something that was rooted in the tones of nature, but deeply emotional and powerful. Many sessions at Pitchwire felt like chasing a ghost. And then, sometimes, you catch the ghost. The score's core was built from tonalities mined from every corner of nature. At the center was this fractal, very difficult instrument built out of wind recordings, cobbled into ... almost a choir, and that became the heart of the score.
(fast-forward exactly one whirlwind)
When director Jordan Noel reached out to me about a score album, I knew it wouldn't be the usual 30-track, cue after cue experience. He knew that I'd be more suited to something broader and more thoughtful. So, ultimately, we decided on this format, of 3 sprawling movements where pieces are reorchestrated, expanded, explored and adorned. And I couldn't be more thrilled about it. Enjoy the longview of the sonic world we built for the film This World Alone.
This album is dedicated to Ziggy.
